We have all heard the “Quick Fix” methods, hairspray, tooth paste, bug repellent. “Really!!” These methods may work for the short term, but I guarantee after the first rain these products will be washed away and your headlights will be back to how they were. This is why most people will seek out a professional to restore their headlights.
Your vehicles headlights may have become discolored or dull due to oxidation primarily due to UV light and other environmental factors such as road debris impact (stones, sand, etc.) rain, and exposure to caustic chemicals. Over time the protective hardcoat breaks down with UV degradation and wear from abrasion, etc. If left untreated the headlights will eventually develop small surface cracks, a condition referred to as crazing. The effectiveness of the headlight in terms of light output measured in lux can be significantly reduced. This condition which results in hazy and discoloured lenses is known for causing reduced night time visibility for drivers as the condition becomes worse. It is possible for cloudy and hazy headlights to be restored to a like-new condition and represents typically a far more economical alternative than replacing the lens.
Here at MAXinc Detailing we perform an extensive 5 step process, to restore the lights back to a crystal clear finish. We begin with a three step sanding procedure. Removing all the oxidation and rock pits, while leveling the surface. First we use 3m P500 grit sand paper.
As you can see the P500 grit is fairly aggressive but this is a vital step to get down to the original plastic lens.
Next we move on to the P800. This is used to remove the sanding marks from the P500.

At this stage of the process most of the defects have been removed.

We then move on to the P3000 grit sand paper. This is used to remove any sanding marks left behind, and it leaves a smooth surface. All of the defects have now been completely removed. Now it’s time to polish the headlights and reveal a crystal clear finish.
The headlights are clear, and visibility has been restored immensely.
But we do not stop here. The surface is still vulnerable to future defects. This is why we seal in all the work we performed with an IGL Headlight coating.

This gives the headlights a protective barrier from harmful UV light and micro marring for years to come.
